** RARE BIRD ALERT for PALM WARBLER (Vernon)

The Featured Birds Include:

SWAMP SPARROW (Vaseux)
GREAT EGRET (Kelowna)
PACIFIC LOON (Kelowna)

Other birds mentioned include:

Chipping Sparrow
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW

Sightings for October 4

A PALM WARBLER was found in the Okanagan Landing area of Vernon (CS). The
bird was seen in cottonwoods along the SE. edge of the bay. At the
intersection of Okanagan Landing Rd and Lakeshore Rd, park and follow a path
through a grassy field towards the cottonwoods near the lake. The bird was
observed for a while before flying W. along the lake shore.

The lingering female type CINAMMON TEAL continues on the small farm pond
about 1 km W. of Rose's Pond on the Vernon Commonage (CS).

In Kelowna, the GREAT EGRET continues at Mud Bay, which is at the foot of
Francis Ave. It was reported there on Oct 3 (DW).

A SWAMP SPARROW was banded at the Vaseux Lak Banding Station on the 2nd
(LN,SO,GH,LH). This bird was in first winter plumage and one banded on the
3rd was in adult winter plumage (SO,CC). Also hanging around the banding
station on the 3rd was a lingering CHIPPING SPARROW (CC).

In Kelowna an imm. PACIFIC LOON was seen on Okanagan Lake from the beach
access on Bluebird Road, off Lakeshore Road in the Mission area (HV).

Two HORNED LARKS were in the park right across from the St. Hubertus Winery
on Lakeshore Rd. in the Mission area of Kelowna (HV).


Sightings for October 1

An imm. WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was found at Munson's Pond in Kelowna (CC).
The bird was being watched by an imm. SHARP-SHINNED HAWK in the bushes near
the trailer at the NW. corner of the pond.

Discovered on the 30th of September, and seen again October 1, was an adult
PACIFIC LOON at Rotary Beach, on Lakeshore Road, in Kelowna (CC).

The GREAT EGRET continues in Mud Bay, at the foot of Francis Ave, in
downtown Kelowna (CC,DB).


Sightings for September 29

>From the foot of Cedar Ave, in Kelowna, the GREAT EGRET was again seen
foraging along the shoreline (CC). The bird has been frequenting Mud Bay, at
the Maude Roxby Bird Sanctuary, but appears to make small forays elsewhere
to feed.

An imm. WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was seen at Sutherland Park, in the N. end
Kelowna (HV) and three adult GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were at Munson's
Pond in Kelowna (CC).
