I know this is an old thread, but it is an interesting
story.
I was fishing on the Kelly Creek in Idaho last week,
and heard a classic Red-Tail Hawk call coming from
just upstream. I Could not see the bird, but it kept
calling. I was getting a little suspicious, when a
Bald Eagle came flying up the river, and the calls
from upstream changed to Eagle cries! Later I finally
spotted the Stellar's Jay in the trees.
He changed his calls as soon as the Bald came into
view.
Cheeky !!!
Do you suppose they imitate raptors more often than
other species, or do we just notice it more when they
do?
