This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Rare Bird Alert for
Sunday, October 5th, sponsored in part by Wild Birds Unlimited, with
stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver.


Sightings for October 5th

At Boundary Bay, in the woodlot east of the foot of 112th Street, a
late MacGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER was reported.

At the foot of 104th Street were 3 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS.

At the "mansion" west of the foot of 96th Street were 3 STILT
SANDPIPERS, a LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS.

At Blackie Spit in Surrey, a STILT SANDPIPER was seen on the afternoon
high tide.

At the "compensation lagoon" on the north side of the Tsawwassen ferry
jetty, one MARBLED GODWIT was seen.

At Burnaby Lake, a high count of 18 PIED-BILLED GREBES was reported,
as well as one SHORT-EARED OWL.


Sightings for October 4th

A bird thought to be possibly an EYE-BROWED THRUSH was seen for about
20 minutes in a backyard in the 8000 block of Kaymar Drive in Burnaby.
It has not been seen since. Confirmation of this sighting would be
welcomed.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, Delta, there were still 4 SHARP-TAILED
SANDPIPERS in the West Field near the viewing tower. Also at Reifel
were a GREEN HERON, 4 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 13 CASPIAN TERNS, 2
COMMON TERNS, and a LESSER YELLOWLEGS.

At the mansion west of the foot of 96th Street on Boundary Bay were a
STILT SANDPIPER and a LESSER YELLOWLEGS. Also here were 5 PACIFIC
GOLDEN-PLOVERS, 3 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, and one RED KNOT among
hundreds of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS.

At Lighthouse Marine Park in Point Roberts, Washington were a MARBLED
MURRELET and 3 PARASITIC JAEGERS.

The CRESTED AUKLET was still being reported at Pedder Bay, between
Metchosin and Sooke on southern Vancouver Island. For further updates

Sightings for October 3rd

At Cecil Green Park, near the Anthropology Museum at the University of
B.C., were a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, 5 YELLOW WARBLERS, 2 HUTTON'S
VIREOS, and 2 HERMIT THRUSHES.

At Lighthouse Marine Park in Point Roberts, Washington were 4
HEERMANN'S GULLS and a RHINOCEROS AUKLET.


Sightings for October 2nd

At the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver was a NORTHERN
SHRIKE.

At Hastings and Boundary in Vancouver was a PEREGRINE FALCON.
