Subject: Northern Shrike in Seattle backyard
Date: Wed, 8 Oct 2003 07:35:06 -0700

Greetings,

Yesterday (10/7/03) I got a call from my housemates describing a =
"strange" bird in our backyard in Seattle's Crown Hill area. As I =
listened to the very clear description (including size, coloration, =
behavior) my disbelief mounted. When I directed them to check out the =
Northern Shrike in the (ever-ready) field guide (next to the binoculars =
on the kitchen counter) they agreed that's what it was.

Perched on a wire, diving after some small birds (sparrows) in the =
neighbor's backyard. Seen again a couple of hours later on the same =
wire.

Needless to say I spent a lot of the daylight hours remaining after I =
got home glancing out the windows at the backyard. To no avail.

Migration is a surprising time of year, wouldn't you say?

Cheers,
Martin Muller, Seattle
