Clear DayI stayed at Vaughn Bay (on the west side of Key Peninsula in Pierce
County) this weekend. Both mornings I fed the gulls leftover bread, a
pleasant, mostly harmless activity that I hadn't done since I was a kid
there in the 60's. (They still come if you call.) The first morning my
brother and I counted 200 gulls -- quite hungry. On the second morning there
were at least a hundred gulls of various ilk surrounding our dock, braving
the dogs and me to snatch some crumbs. Meanwhile, I spotted five Turkey
Vultures overhead. They were cruising south, but diverted their path and
dropped down to check on the commotion. It was quite a sight! A couple of
the resident Bald Eagles on their morning flight also dipped overhead to
check on the food potential (nil) before heading out to Case Inlet. I'm not
much of a bird watcher, but I thought the Turkey Vultures were worth a
report.
