In October and November, Seattle Audubon has scheduled two great
classes in its Ornithology for the Birder Series.
Both will be taught by Kathleen Hunt, a biologist with over 10 years'
experience studying birds. She conducted field research on Lapland
longspurs for six years for her Ph.D. thesis at the University of
Washington, and has also worked with a variety of other birds from
Hawaiian honeycreepers to alcids. She is currently researching stress
and reproduction in both mammals and birds, and regularly teaches
physiology, anatomy, evolution and general biology at UW.

Anatomy of Birds
Kathleen Hunt, Ph.D. UW biologist
Have you ever wondered what birds look like on the inside? Want to
know how mammal and avian species differ in their internal and external
anatomy? Come and find out all about this fascinating subject as we
explore bird anatomy through the use of drawings, bird skins, wings,
and even an actual bird dissection. You will certainly leave this
class with a more intimate understanding of birds!
Class: Monday, October 20th and Wednesday, October 22nd, 7:00-9:00PM
Location: CUH, Douglas Classroom
Cost: $40 members, $55 nonmembers
Limit: 15

Physiology of Birds
With Kathleen Hunt, Ph.D., UW biologist
How can birds fly at altitudes where mammals pass out? How can a tiny
chickadee survive at ?40F during the Alaskan winter without freezing?
How can a sandpiper produce nearly her own body weight in eggs in just
a few days? Are birds "better" than mammals? In this class we will
learn how the bird body works. We will observe internal organs of birds
and will discuss avian circulation, reproduction, thermoregulation, and
the remarkable avian lung. We will compare birds to mammals to see why
birds are capable of such extraordinary feats of endurance and
athleticism.
Class: Monday, November 17th, and Wednesday, November 19th, 7:00-9:00PM
Location: Douglas Classroom, Center for Urban Horticulture
Cost: $40 members, $55 nonmembers
Limit: 24

To register, please call the Nature Shop at 206 523-4483 Monday -
Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM.
