Spent Saturday at Ocean Shores, primarily at the Jetty, Inner bay, Marina &
Cabana pond. The wind made seeing anything difficult (at least for me) in
the surf off the jetty, but it was interesting watching the 10 beached
Western Grebes huddled in the sand to the right of the jetty. They were
there in both the AM and around 4 PM when I re-visited. On several
occasions during my afternoon visit I saw a grebe stand up, curl it's neck
in an S, and run forward (paralell to the shoreline and more or less into
the wind out of the southwest) with its wings held back and flapping. I
thought it was reminiscent of the dances they do on their breeding lakes,
altho in this case they were undoubtedly just trying to find a way to move
back upwind on the beach.

On the lee shoreline off Marine View drive I did find 5 red phalaropes
beached just off one of the access roads. They seemed to be resting but
looked (hopefully) in otherwise good health. Also, a palm warbler made a
brief appearance out of the scotch broom at Discovery Avenue & Point Brown
Avenue, which I guess is a good spot for palm's? I was watching the
entrance to the Marina & eating my lunch when it popped out to take a drink
at a large mud puddle here. Seems to me someone else mentioned this bird
recently. Saw no fulmars or any other windblown refugees
