This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Bird Alert for Sunday,
October 19th, sponsored in part by Wild Birds Unlimited, with stores in
Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Rare Bird Alert for a WESTERN SCRUB JAY. Other featured birds are SWAMP
SPARROW, and SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER.

Sightings for October 19

A WESTERN SCRUB JAY was observed today in the vicinity of 4126 River Rd. W
in Ladner. This house is west of 41B & River Rd. The homeowner at 4126
River Rd. is allowing birders to enter the property along the East Side to
observe the feeders in the back yard. Please observe the bird from the back
of the property. It may not be necessary to enter the property as it seems
to be bringing food from local feeders to trees on the opposite side of the
road from the houses.

Among the highlights reported from the Reifel Refuge today were 2 SWAMP
SPARROWS. Other highlights were 7 SANDHILL CRANES, and a BARN OWL. Six
MUTE SWANS were observed near the Westham Island Bridge.

Seen near the end of 33A in Delta were 60 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, 3 RED KNOTS,
and 36 LEAST SANDPIPERS.

A grey phase GYRFALCON was sighted at 88th on Boundary Bay. Near 104th were
12 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. Near the intersection of 64th & 28th were a PACIFIC
GOLDEN-PLOVER, 12 LEAST SANDPIPERS and STILT SANDPIPER.

Reported from Iona was an immature SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER and on the outer
pond a RING-NECKED DUCK.

A WESTERN SCREECH-OWL was observed at the West End of Deas Island RP.

In Vancouver's Stanley Park near the Stone Bridge was a WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW. Also near by was a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL. At Beaver Lake an
immature GREEN HERON was observed.

October 18

Reported from the Reifel Refuge was a SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER and a NORTHERN
SHRIKE.

Seen at Point Roberts' Lighthouse Park were 2 CASPIAN TERNS and several
HEERMANN'S GULLS

October 17

Seen near the foot of 88th at Boundary Bay was a PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER and a
NORTHERN SHRIKE.

There were no reports for October 16.

October 15

A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen at Campbell Valley Park near the bridge
that is about ? way between the north and south entrances.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen at Iona.

Near 96th at Boundary Bay was a STILT SANDPIPER and seen near 88th was a
PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER.
