I think the Purdue survey is well-intentioned but asks the wrong questions.
I believe birders measure the quality of the birding experience by the
quality of the sightings, not by the quality of the neighborhood. Some of
my best sightings have been in sewage ponds and garbage dumps. That doesn't
mean we think it's okay to trash the environment. Of course we care deeply
about the environment. We resent the encroachment of industry and
development on natural areas, especially when they destroy habitat and
threaten the surviveabililty of the birds. But basically birders go where
the birds are..
