This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Bird Alert for Thursday,
October 23rd, sponsored in part by Wild Birds Unlimited, with stores in
Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Rare Bird Alert for a HUDSONIAN GODWIT and a CATTLE EGRET. The WESTERN
SCRUB JAY was not reported today.

Sightings for October 23

A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was observed in the company of 6 MARBLED GODWITS at the
Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty Compensation Lagoon. The compensation lagoon is the
area located north east of the car staging area at the Ferry Terminal.

The CATTLE EGRET was seen on Westham Island, 2 fields east of Westham Island
Rd.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was observed along 72nd near OWL. Near 72nd & Hwy 10 was
a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK.

A HERMIT THRUSH was reported near the intersection of Broom & Lilac Rds. In
Surrey.

October 22

There is the possibility of 2 CATTLE EGRETS in the area. One was seen in a
field with cattle near 72nd & 36th. Another was seen on Westham Island.

The WESTERN SCRUB JAY continued for a 6th day at 4126 River Rd. W in Ladner.
This house is west of 41B & River Rd. The homeowner at 4126 River Rd. is
allowing birders to enter the property along the East Side to observe the
feeders in the back yard. Please observe the bird from the back of the
property.

Observed at Brunswick Point was a BARN OWL in the woodlot.

At Wellington Park was a WESTERN MEADOWLARK.

Two PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were seen in a field off 34th just south of River
Rd. At the opposite end of 34th were 30 LAPLAND LONGSPURS.

Reported from Reifel were 2 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS, 7 SANDHILL CRANES,
and a SWAMP SPARROW near the tower.

In a ploughed field between 88th and the Mansion were 6 GOLDEN-PLOVERS and 4
HORNED LARKS.

October 21

At Brunswick Point were an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW and 2 SWAMP SPARROWS.
These birds were located along the dike just past the woodlot near the bend
in the dike.

A SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was found in a flooded field along 34th St. south
of River Rd. Eighteen GREATER YELLOWLEGS were also seen in the same field.

The WILLET was observed at the base of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty.

At 72nd at Boundary Bay were an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and a COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT.

Seen at Colony Farm RP was a MERLIN and a NORTHERN SHRIKE.

A BAND-TAILED PIGEON was reported from the 3100 block of Spuraway in
Coquitlam.
