Sherry Thiel and I did some Cowlitz County birding over the past
weekend. We started at the small town of Ryderwood where we had a Scrub
Jay, a couple of Red Breasted Sapsuckers, Buffleheads, Hooded
Mergansers, Green Winged Teals, American Wigeons, and 1 Eurasian Wigeon.
As we headed south on I-5, we had an American Kestrel near milepost 60.
At the Longview ponds we had 1 Ruddy Duck, Lesser Scaups, Wood Ducks,
Ring Necked Ducks, Northern Shovelers, Northern Pintails, Green Winged
Teals, Buffleheads, and Mew Gulls. We ended the day walking around Lake
Sacajewa in Longview where we had 1 Cooper's Hawk, 2 Wilson's Snipe,
Ring Billed Gulls, California Gulls, and a Double Crested Cormorant that
we watched swim around under shallow waters chasing hiding fish out from
the rocks.
