For the first time, I saw a (the?) PIED-BILLED GREBE on my (east) side of the river, when it swam and dove passed by my observation point. Within 8 minutes, it was at the southerly bend, to the southwest of me. Given the outgoing current, it made good time going upstream and across. No bare bank or mudflat was visible until near the very end of the time I scanned the river, which may be why so few gulls were seen: when the tide is down, gulls hang out on the mudflats. Two BELTED KINGFISHERS rattled around while chasing each other across, up, and down Turning Basin #3. A harbor seal cruised along the three gillnets still extant.
