Hey Tweeters & Inland NW,

Sorry for the day-late post. On Friday
evening Ryan Shaw, Tracey Norris, and I
drove over the mountains for a long day
of birding on Saturday. We stayed in
Othello that night, and waking up at sunrise
we headed to Windust Park in eastern Franklin
County. There was a bit of activity here,
but nothing outstanding so we moved on
eventually. Palouse Falls was similarly
productive for a diversity of migrants.
At Lyons Ferry Park, we covered some good
flocks around the parking lot before
trudging out to the islands. It was rather
hot here, 95-100 and by the time we were
back to the car we had had enough sun to
last a lifetime. On the island, there was
an apparent lack of birds at first glance,
so we were thinking about leaving. But I
decided to wander off and check one more
clump of trees. While I was still quite
a distance away I raised my binoculars to
a "Baypoll" Warbler working its way up the
trunk. Ryan and Tracey hurried to the tree,
and over the next 15 minutes we had satisfying
views of a BLACKPOLL. This location continues
to produce rarities. Our final stop of the
day for passerines was at Bassett Park in Adams
County, which seemed a bit cooler than Lyons
and was good for empids as usual.

The afternoon was spent looking for shorebirds
at various areas including Washtucna sewer
ponds, Hatton Rest Area, Para/McCain's Ponds,
and Lind Coulee the latter site was by far the
best, and evening light helped us as well.
