Hi. This is Daniel Bastaja posting for Friday, September 12, 2003. There
are several very good photos of a juvenile basic plumage Arctic Loon
(taken in the Czech Republic) at the following website.

Although there is no direct comparison in the photo with other species,
I still thought it might be a good pictorial reference for this winter
when, inevitably, someone encounters that odd looking loon that may or
may not be an Arctic. My personal feeling is that Arctic Loons, while
very rare, probably occur off the west coast of North America on a
reasonably regular basis. But they are so darn hard to positively ID,
and there is so much water, and so many loons. It is just a question of
time before a categorical Arctic shows up so keep an eye peeled.
