I expected this outgoing tide, with the mud along the shoreline being more exposed as the water receded, would facilitate seeing more shorebirds. It was not to be, at least during the time I scanned the river. A juvenile OSPREY was perched on the west power tower eating a fish; an adult was actively hunting from a perch slightly higher on the tower. Twice I saw the adult do a side-to-side head weave and then glide-dive to the river. Each time it returned empty-taloned. With all the salmon jumping, I expect that the Osprey will soon be rewarded.

My initial estimate of about 500 EUROPEAN STARLINGS resolved soon to be about 1500: a steady stream of S. vulgaris flew by in front of (thank goodness, not over!) me for a brief time.
