Royce is correct, "Gulls of North America, Europe, and Asia"
is a
monumental effort. Unfortunately, it also appears to contain
a
monumental number of errors.

Klaus Malling Olsen and Hans Larsson are to be praised for
their
incredible (almost mind-numbing) effort: 608 pages covering
43 species
of gull. Especially nice are the four "Large Gull Taxa"
plates comparing
48 adult winter plumages including subspecies and hybrids.
Also
extremely helpful are the seven plates comparing wingtip
patterns in
large gulls (showing 63 wingtips).

Of note to us in California are two species splits: American
Herring
Gull (Larus smithsonianus) from Herring Gull, and Mew Gull
(Larus
brachyrhynchus) from Common Gull.

Unfortunately, the excellent work by the author and artist
is marred by
what appears to be extremely shoddy publishing and
proofreading (by this
I mean the proofreading of the final produced book, not the
reviewing of
the text before publication). In addition to the 22 errors
noted on the
enclosed errata sheet (one of which is also incorrect), I
discovered
another 10 errors in just a few minutes of browsing
(starting with the
first sentence in the book and ending with the final map).
One of these
errors involves two figures and captions on the Western Gull
plate. For
those who want to correct their books, I've listed the
errors I found
below, and encourage others to report any errors they have
discovered.

Hopefully, I just coincidentally found the ten final errors
in the book.
I doubt it. However, you'll be missing out on a wealth of
information if
you wait for the corrections to make it into the second
edition. This is
certainly a "must have" book.

By the way, does anyone know if anyone is collecting these
errors for a
web-based errata sheet?

Additional Errata for Gulls of North American, Europe, and
Asia

Page 6. In the first sentence, "in 1982" is repeated.

Page 6. The third paragraph has an extra carriage return in
the middle
of it.

Page 31. No caption for Figure 6. (Should be the same
caption as Figure
5.)

Page 89. The map should be labeled "Mew Gull" instead of the
alternate
name, "Short-billed Gull"

Page 167-167. The labels on figures 7 and 8 should be
reversed, and
captions 7 and 8 should be changed to reflect that
occidentalis is paler
above and has darker eyes than wymani.

Page 249. At the top of the page, measurements should be
"Lengths in
mm".

Page 492. In the third sentence, add "in" between "status"
and "1970".

Page 547. Top right. Replace "Plates 79-80" with "Plate 79",
and "Photos
775-783" with "Photos 775-785".

Page 555. Top right. Replace "Photos 784-792" with "Photos
786-794".

Page 577. The ranges on the map are far southeast of where
they should
be.
