Subject: [BIRDCHAT] Gambell, AK Eurasian Wryneck and Common Rosefinch images

Hi Chatters:

I'm home on a one-day turnaround ... just arriving back from Gambell and
Nome, Alaska from 8/26 - 9/12/2003.

I've quickly posted several images of the Gambell Eurasian Wryneck at the
following URL:

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/pdavisbb/gambell_fall_2003_images.htm

This web page also includes one image of the Gambell female Common Rosefinch.

The Wryneck, discovered by Jim Zamos and Paul Lehman, was seen in the
Gambell boatyard between 9/2 and 9/5. It mostly hung out and fed on whale
bones/blubber. This is the second record for North America; the first was a
dead bird found in Wales, AK (on the edge of the Bering Strait) on
September 8, 1945. This is the first live bird seen and documented in North
America.

The Common Rosefinch, discovered by Paul Lehman, was seen on 9/1 and 9/2 in
the "far boneyard".

It was a great trip, other Gambell rarity highlights included Little
Buntings, Reed Bunting, Middendorf's Grasshopper-Warbler, and a Siberian
Accentor.

Phil
