Had a nice little hike yesterday on the flanks of Mt.Baker, up to Pack
Butte above Schriebers Meadow. While enjoying the view at about 5000
feet, we saw a smallish flock of swifts fly by somewhat above us.
Although I only got a short look through the glasses, they appeared to
be black swifts. Not having a lot of experience with that species, I
was wondering if it is a logical spot for them this time of the year. I
have seen the Vaux swift in the mountains before, but have not noticed
the black.
Also saw a fairly large number of thrush like birds that I originally
thought were Swainson's thrush, but due to the white on outside tail
feathers now think were American pippit. They were in a loose flock in
the open meadow at around 4800 feet. Behavior was consistent with the
pippit, except for a lack of "bobbing".
A fair number of species during the day, including a soaring osprey
above the lookout.
