Tweeters,

It's a brisk day on the river, and with the first AMERICAN WIGEON here since early last Spring, a reminder for me that Fall isn't far away. I was a bit taken aback by the sight of a lone PIED-BILLED GREBE swimming and diving near the goose exclusion area on the west side of Turning Basin #3. That's the first I've seen on the river. Notably lacking is the local Peregrine Falcon; not seen since 9/8 even in the early morning. I'll take a walk down near the power tower starting tomorrow morning to see if it's still around.

Birds seen today include the following:
Pied-billed Grebe
Double-crested Cormorant (5)
Canada Goose (11)
Gadwall (2)
American Wigeon (3)
Mallard (14)
Common Merganser
Osprey (2; juv and adult on the west power tower)
Killdeer (3)
Mew Gull
Glaucous-winged Gull (5)
Rock Pigeon (94 (!) by actual count)
Belted Kingfisher
American Crow (6)
Bewick's Wren (one was vocalizing--also saw it--on my side of the river; another was vocalizing from the other side of the river)
European Starling (~50)
White-crowned Sparrow (the first in quite a while, although there are probably more on a different part of this campus)

May all your birds be identified,
