For two years we've had a pied-billed grebe nest in the lilies near our dock.
She begins her big sit early in the second week of August, and the baby
grebes are born in September. This year, our Grebe had four eggs, but only three
hatched. Within a week, she had lost one (perhaps to our resident river otter?)
and by week three, all had perished. Now, she seems to be going through the
motions of starting another nest. She and her mate are back among the lilies,
yacking almost constantly, and she's just sitting on top of a pile, perfectly
still, and he waits patiently a few feet away.

I know it is not uncommon for PBG to have two broods, but isn't it a little
late in the year to be starting a second one now?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or information you can give me.
