Today, I thought that even with the break in the rain showers I wouldn't see much because of all of the fishers-for-salmon that were drifting by in their boats. Patience, however, was rewarded by several fun sightings, including an OSPREY diving into the river in front of me--it failed to catch anything. A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD paused briefly at a butterfly bush or shrub (I think that's what these plants are) before zooming off downriver. This was the first hummingbird of any kind I've seen all year at this spot, and totally unexpected at this late date. The PIED-BILLED GREBE again made an appearance near the goose exclusion area on the west side of the river. A BELTED KINGFISHER was harassed several times by another kingfisher--probably the local resident--which usually perches on the chain-link fence near the shoreline. This was the first time I've seen two kingfishers The high tide during this period covered all but a very small portion of the mud bank below the vegetation line.

Birds seen today included the following:

Pied-billed Grebe
Double-crested Cormorant (2)
Great Blue Heron (perched in the weeping willow on the far bank)
Mallard (15)
Common Merganser (5; flyby)
Osprey (2; one adult, one juv)
Glaucous-winged Gull (5; two vociferous young kept begging from an adult, which kept swimming away from them // probably the same threesome I've seen for the past few days)
Rock Pigeon (4)
Rufous Hummingbird
Belted Kingfisher (2)
American Crow (2)
European Starling (8)
Song Sparrow
White-crowned Sparrow
House Sparrow (3)

May all your birds be identified,
