Dear Tweeters,

Several local birders have observed a Great Egret in Skagit County, apparently present since September 13. I was able to see the bird this morning. Two Great Blue Herons were with it.

The bird is usually seen in a slough that crosses State Route 20 at about mile 76.2, just west of a fire station. This is between the towns of Lyman and Hamilton. Look to the north of the highway. At least one other observation was made at the end of one of the local roads (I am not sure which one but was told that the road may have begun with the letter P).

Interestingly, a Great Egret was seen for several weeks, or perhaps months, only about a mile west of the above location, in the late fall of 1991 into early 1992. The 1991-1992 bird was always seen in the fields to the north of SR 20, at about mile 75, near Hamilton Cemetery Road. Another Great Egret was seen in the exact same place (near mile 75) on May 15, 1997.

Please use common sense if you go looking for this bird in a motor vehicle! We are experiencing a rash of accidents on SR 20 of late. The GREG location features limited sight distance, as well as Neanderthal drivers who are bent on getting to the stop light in Sedro-Woolley or the tavern in Concrete before their neighbours.
