Did I ever get a lot of response to that one! Thankyou so much to you
all; too many to respond to individually.
My conclusion is Arial (?) Yellow Jackets. I have not seen anything
resembling the Bald Faced Hornet, not that they would be good company
either. I have had a lot of Yellow Jacket activity on that side of the house
this summer, and now I know why. Never even looked up until yesterday!
My decision is to wait until it is VERY cold, and knock the sucker down,
and stick it out by the bird feeding station in the back yard, out of the
dogs reach. Thankyou so much for all the information! I feel guilty
knocking down a passive nest of insects, but now that I know what they
are........
