An absolutely gorgeous day out here today! The river, however, produced few species at Turning Basin #3. The OSPREYS are still here, with one adult on the west power tower, and a juvenile perched on one of the crossbars of the nest support at Hamm Creek. Lots of gillnets (I could see 10 of them from my perch) strung out on the river, with one boat hauling in a some salmon--a few of which were quite large, and discarding one dead DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT. It doesn't pay to be a diving bird when it's gillnet season on the rivers. The PIED-BILLED GREBE, however, seems to stay near the area of the goose exclusion area on the west side, which appears to be out of the mainstream of net traffic.

Note: Someone asked me if I'd seen the Peregrine Falcon lately: my answer was "Not since September 8." I'm still looking, though.

Birds seen today include the following:
Pied-billed Grebe
Double-crested Cormorant (3: 2 extant; 1 KIA (i.e., "killed in action," for those of us averse to abbreviations)
Great Blue Heron
Canada Goose (26)
Mallard (4)
Osprey (2)
Killdeer (3)
Glaucous-winged Gull (7)
Rock Pigeon (>20)
Belted Kingfisher
American Crow (4)
Bewick's Wren (singing, about 10 feet from me)
European Starling (>50)
House Finch (2)
American Goldfinch (2)
House Sparrow (2)

May all your birds be identified,
