Clarice just provided a correction to my earlier note about gray jays
at Fort Lewis. Although we have had gray jays there more than
once, only once did we catch a hatch year bird. It was only one, and
the adults were following it as I described it. The bird was actually
past the stage of having a little down on it, but had clearly been
hatched nearby.
