On September 3, Laurie Ness and Ken Burton discovered a juvenile SABINE'S
GULL at the Yakima Delta just west of Bateman Island. It remained for
several days.
Also on September 3, Bob Woodley reported 16 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS and 3
PECTORAL SANDPIPERS at the delta. Also present were Greater and Lesser
Yellowlegs, Western and Least Sandpipers, 16 Long-billed Dowitchers, and 20
Red-necked Phalaropes. Also at Nelson Island off Groves Park in Richland
he found an OSPREY and 7 COMMON MERGANSERS.
Nancy LaFramboise found a lone SANDERLING at the Yakima Delta on September
5. 2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were still present.
On September 7, Bill and Nancy LaFramboise walked Bateman Island and
observed the SABINE'S GULL as well as a PEREGRINE FALCON. At the small
pond on the east trail, there was a SORA and a COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
Tom Aversa birded Iowa Beef Ponds and the Walla Walla Delta on September
11. He found the following highlights: A RUFF at Iowa Beef as well as 1
late BLACK-NECKED STILT, 2 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and 10 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS. A PEREGRINE FALCON was also present. Tom also found a MARBLED
GODWIT on the Walla Walla Delta and 4 STILT SANDPIPERS at Lind Coulee north
of Othello.
On September 14, Delores Herrin reported 4 GREAT EGRETS in Finley.
On September 16, Mary Lilga reported a TURKEY VULTURE in Prosser. On the
19th, Ruth Fischer observed an amazing 12 TURKEY VULTURES over the Chamna
Preserve in Richland.
Bob Woodley noted at least 200 SANDHILL CRANE over his North Richland yard
on September 23. Bob Wilson saw 50 crane over Ringold on the 26th.
Jack and Murrel Dawson reported the return of GRAY PARTRIDGE to their
Benton City home on September 23 after a 2 year absence.
On September 24, Bob Woodley found an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at the Yakima
Delta. It remained on September 25 and a juvenile SABINE'S GULL was also
present.
