Hello spring tweeters!

I was taking a lovely ramble through Carkeek on my
not-usual day, enjoying the winter wrens and song
sparrows singing away, the towhees scratching and
zhreeing, when I heard a raven. Ok, so I thought it
was a crow with a cold, but I kept hearing it and
finally chased it down to a big fir close to the
water's edge. It was definately a raven, much bigger
than a crow, with those neat hairs they have on their
bills (I know I've read what those are called, but
just don't remember), and that voice! So we watched
each other a while, then s/he moved off, talking the
whole time, with an occasional crow moving in to check
him/her out. They didn't seem too concerned though.
Anyway, I stopped at the environmental center to get
their bird list and no raven listed. I suppose it
might be a young bird, or just one that felt like
checking out the Sound. I just thought it was cool.

My species list:

California Gull (I think--I still need a gull class!)
Bonaparte's gull--a huge group just offshore
also several on the beach near the crows.
Hairy Woodpecker
No. Flicker
Common Raven
Red-breasted Nuthatch (heard)
Bushtit, including two nests--one head poking
out of one of them.
Winter Wren
Bewick's wren (my first in carkeek for some reason)
Robin
Song Sparrow
Spotted Towhee

Beautiful day to have for spring break!

Happy birding!

Rebecca Evans
