Hello all,
While putting up bluebird boxes on Jasper Mountain in eastern Walla Walla County today we came across Pygmy Nuthatches in 3 different areas. There are only 2 old records of Pygmy Nuthatch in Walla Walla county. This is an area birded regularly and these birds were not detected just 2 weeks ago. This species is unexpected in this County and yet 60 miles to the south in Oregon it is a common species. We located these birds in mixed second growth conifers at about 3000'. All were in and around snags and were in loose association with Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatches and Mountain Chickadees. We also located several pair of Chestnut-backed Chickadees along with two Pileated Woodpeckers. MerryLynn discovered six Red-naped Sapsuckers on territory. Spectacular weather!
