Introduction to Shorebird ID: A Beginner's Course on Washington's Coastal Shorebirds

With Jim Flynn, Master Birder

If you confuse plovers with peeps or have ever despaired at sorting out all of those long-legged and long-billed brown shorebirds, then sign up for this introductory level shorebird class and learn how to make sense of the muddle of mud-probing shorebirds. Slides and information sheets on habitat, season of occurrence, size, and overall shape of shorebirds will help you narrow the choices to the one or two most likely species. >From there the final ID is within reach! During the field trip to Grays Harbor and Tokeland we will see most of the common coastal shorebirds in their colorful breeding plumages.

Class: Monday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 13, 7:00-9:00 PM

Location: CUH, Douglas Classroom

Field Trip: Saturday, May 1st or Sunday, May 2nd. Sign up for the field trip on the first night of class. There may be only one field trip day depending upon the number of participants.

Butterflies of the Puget Sound Region

with Idie Ulsh, Founder & Past President of the Washington Butterfly Association, Past President of Seattle Audubon.

This relaxed and informative class is designed for persons who wish to learn about the beautiful butterflies of this area. You will learn where to find and identify 30 of the most common butterfly species. The course serves as an introduction to the popular and fascinating activity of butterflying with binoculars. Butterfly natural history, gardening and photography will also be included. Classes are slide-based with superb photographs of all species and topics discussed.

Class: Thursdays, May 20, May 27, and June 3, 7:00-9:00 PM

Field Session: Saturday, May 22 (Will be rescheduled if it rains.)

Seattle's Crows: The Breeding Season

With John Withey, UW Wildlife Science Graduate Student

This class is a chance to learn more about crows and their population growth in the Seattle area. We'll start with a slide show to talk about the natural history of crows, with an emphasis on breeding biology, and results from our ongoing research on crow populations in the Seattle area. Then we will take a walk around the campus (up to 2 miles round-trip) to see what some of our color banded crows are up to, looking for active nests (we should be able to see nests in a variety of stages, from incubation, to feeding nestlings, to fledging young). We will also discuss how you can help our research, and share crow stories.

Class and Field Trip: Sunday, May 23, 8:00 AM-12:00 PM noon. Coffee and juice provided.

Location: University of Washington campus, Anderson Hall, Room 304. (C10 parking lot.)
