Tweeters,

I attended Jim Flynn's shorebird class and the follow-up field trip last year
and found it to be very helpful and well-taught, with a number of good handouts
to take home. He recommended the big Sibley guide but also brought several
others for people to examine. The only thing I wish he had added is to play
vocalizations of the birds. I have seen an instructor play/stop a specially
prepared cassette while displaying and discussing the species' slide(s) then
sequentially compare the confusing ones at the end, and it's very effective
before a field trip. Jim did discuss vocalizations and point them out in the
field, but one can't expect every species to be so cooperative. That said, it
was a fine class, and I recommend it to anyone who's interested in learning
shorebird ID.

Note: I am neither a member of SAS, nor do I know Jim personally.
