I could use some help from a Sapsucker Lover out there:

The Red Breasted Sapsucker that was kind enough to land so close to me and stay so long caused me to wonder about the different sub-species listed in Sibley. This bird clearly had the light yellow wash on its belly that Sibley associates with the Northern sub-species, but it also had the somewhat broken white cheekline running from lores, under the eye, then around and down to the shoulder, just like the illustration of the Southern sub-species. Sibley's footnote suggests that there is a sharp division between the two sub-species, but my bird seemed to be a bit of both? Any comments / suggestions?
