Subject: Are hunters idiots?

While I disagree that hunters are a benefit to the environment for a million
reasons, I take back what I said about the Idiot calling, this was said from
the heart in the heat of the moment, I won't go into all the logistics of
why I dislike Hunters. I sometimes forget whom I'm writing to! back home it
is not a derogatory expression to call someone an idiot and it is the same
in Australia, there is a hell of a difference in the English language
between the pond that separates our two countries. I do know that many
people take you literally here, sorry.

One thing I will say while on this thread, imagine all the birders on this
list doing something towards helping our feathered friends in a constructive
manner even if it was to send a letter once a month to the WWW or write a
letter to the local council? Do you know how many people attend say, a
conservation meeting at a local Audubon meeting on average? I can honestly
say I have seen no more than 5 people and mostly less than that attend a
meeting to help preserve what most on this list loves to watch and count!
Look at how many turn up for a bear hunt! Some priorities are not quite
right here.................
We can not preserve what we don't understand..

Martyn,

Please be more respectful when you speak about others with whom you
disagree. Your remarks (quoted below) suggest that you consider all
hunters to be idiots. I am sure there are a number of hunters on this
group, as well as a number of former hunters. All of them have good
reason to be offended by your remarks.

I am not, and never have been, a hunter. However, I have a great deal
of respect for hunters, most of whom care about the environment as
much as birders do. If you look at the history of the conservation
movement in the U.S., hunters (and fishers) as a group have been more
effective in promoting conservation measures than birders have. Most
of them, unlike many birders, are not afraid to put their money where
there mouths are, if it will help to preserve habitat. We as birders
should be working together with hunters' groups to achieve our common
goals, not focussing on the relatively few areas where we differ.

If you want to promote your own ideas, fine, but please DO NOT refer
to those with whom you disagree as "idiots" or "stupid". This is one
reason why I, for one, would prefer that TWEETERS stuck more strictly
to birds. There are some of us who, when discussing conservation
issues (or other contentious issues), cannot seem to resist making
derogatory remarks about those with whom we disagree. The inevitable
result is that some people get offended and end up leaving the group,
and I think this reflects badly on the entire group.

Hunting practices too add to the ever growing quietness that surrounds
us,
what do these idiots do when all has been shot, do they turn the guns
on us?
