(X-posted to Kitsap Birders)

I went for a couple-hour walk w/a non-birder friend today, so didn't get to
linger over or pay all that much attention to the birds. Very nice area in
which to bird, though. We were on some Pope Co.-owned land, road G1000,
which is a nice mixture of deciduous and evergreen trees, w/a few springs
and a nice pond along the way. Also, you can look down onto the water (am
not sure what body of water it is, but it's a big saltwater bay) Didn't
realize it's so close to Bremerton, so will add it to my list of places to
bird over here in Kitsap County. Anyway, in no special order:

Along G-1000:

Song Sparrow
Savannah Sparrow
Spotted Towhee
Dark-eyed Junco
American Robin
Winter Wren (many many many, it was great)
Violet-green Swallow
Tree Swallow
Yellow-rumped Warbler (Aud.)
Crow

My impression is that this will be fabulous flycatcher and warbler
territory, what w/the mixed woods, open areas, and ponds.

Question for you raptor fans: Have you ever known Red-tailed Hawks to nest
in mixed woods, several yards into the woods rather than toward the edge?
At one point close to where the road opened onto a big open area we had this
Huge bird flying at us. Didn't get the bins up quickly enough to get a good
look at it. It angled off into the woods a little ways. Got a better look
at it when it came out of the woods, and it definitely wasn't an accipiter,
nor was it a Barred Owl or Raven. It really looked like a dark morph RTHA.
No vocalizing, so no aural clues. Any thoughts/info?? Thanks.

On the water:

Surf Scoter
White-winged Scoter
Common Loon in full breeding plumage! Gorgeous
Pigeon Guillemot
other birds too far out to ID w/o a scope

Cheers,
Mary
