Subject: Trees, Caterpillars, and Birds

HI:
I watched a sapsucker remove a caterpillar from the side of its nest hole
and fly away with it. I didn't see any birds during last years' "outbreak"
eating the caterpillars, probably due to the guard hairs on the
caterpillars. BUT I did see birds break open the cocoons and eat the
contents. Nicely packaged snack food I guess.
