I prefer to keep a field notebook, because I also do sketches sometimes.
Besides the already mentioned data (species name, location, how many, time of
day, weather, etc.) I like to make notes about the bird's behavior and also
record the field marks I noted for making an identification, the latter when it is
a "lifer" or infrequently seen bird. There are other times, however, when
viewing "old friends," I am most likely to just record name, numbers, and
ambience. Though I am not really a "lister" at heart, in all situations where I
strive to making notes, I record any observed abnormalities, injuries, or bandings.

Cheers!
