Honestly there is no given way to keep a life list. I
would just base how you keep it on what you want to know later on when you
look back at the list. I keep mine in a national geographic guide, by just
highlighting the names of birds I have seen and writting the date and place
of observation by it. Of course not everyone has a lot of current national
geo guides sitting around (somehow i have about 5), so its all a matter of
personal preference. I know a fair amount of very good birders who don't
even keep life lists or have lost count and never felt the need to start up
again. Something to keep in mind with my method is that if you want to keep
up to date with species that split, lump, etc. my way makes it harder to
remember if a new split happens after the book you use was published. Theres
my two cents worth, good birding everyone.
