The Davis Mountains are a favorite of ours. However, timing is everything.
So is altitude. In Arizona, for example, it can be in the 70's in Tuscon
and in the teens inWilcox. You were probably two weeks too early for the
Colima Warbler. Our favorite locale for winter birding is the Lower Rio
Grande of Texas. We spent our winters there for several years. The warbler
migration tends to happen all at once, depending on wind and weather
conditions. Early May is the best time for spring warblers in Texas. They
reach New England by mid-May. Some of the Arizona hummingbirds don't show
up until June. If you plan on going back to Texas, buy a Texas birding
guide. There are several good ones available, all of which you can purchase
from ABA. Also subscribe to Texbird, the Texas equivalent of Tweeters,
starting a week or two before your trip. There you'll be able to network
with local birders and get up-to-the-minute information on what's being seen
where.
