Subject: TWEETERS: Variation on a Theme - WC Sparrow Song

Tonite at the parking lot at "my" Safeway in West Bremerton, I could hear
two White-crowned Sparrows countersinging. One of them sounded like your
typical pugetensis (sp?) song. The other, however, had an "incomplete"
pugetensis song.

Think of the song as "see me pre-tty pre-tty me-ee". Bird #2 Never sang the
"me-ee" portion of the song (which drops in pitch on "me-"); sometimes
stopped after the second "-tty"; and most often added a third "pre-" after
the two "pre-ttys". (Plz pardon this funky description.) Anyway, not a
dramatic departure from the usual WCSP song we hear this time of year, but I
enjoyed listening to it for 15 min or so, as I don't think I'd heard
anything like it before. I'm sure the non-birders in the parking lot
thought I was nuts, but oh well. There are worse things than being bird
nerd, eh??

Good birding,
Mary
