Below is the press release for the International Migratory Bird Day celebration
at Nisqually NWR on Sat. 8 May. I expect to have a display/table set-up for the
Washington Ornithological Society -- if you are a WOS member and would like to

International Migratory Bird Day
at Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge
May 8, 2004

Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge will sponsor a free public event from 9 am
to
4 pm on Saturday May 8th in celebration of the eleventh annual International
Migratory Bird Day. The Refuge is open from sunrise to sunset and will waive
the standard $3/family entrance fee.

Activities include:
- Naturalist guided bird walks on the hour from 10am to 3pm
- Education Center open house with children's activities
- Slide show about the National Wildlife Refuge System at 11am and
1pm
- Exhibits from various organizations
- Wildlife viewing on approximately 7 miles of level, wheel chair
accessible trails
- Telescope viewing stations
- And more . . .

Additional: There will also be a 5 and 1/2 mile guided walk by Dennis Ellison
departing at 7:30 am from the fee station, no RSVP necessary.

International Migratory Bird Day is held in celebration of the spring migration
and the return of millions of birds to their nesting areas. It was created as
a national event in 1993 to focus public attention on the need for action to
help conserve birds and their habitat. Celebrating bird migrations is a great
way to experience the wonder of birds and to help insure that they will always
be a part of our world. This years theme is: Colonial Nesting Migratory Birds.

Driving directions: Exit 114, I-5 in the Nisqually Valley just east of Olympia.
Follow the signs to the Refuge entrance adjacent to the freeway. The entrance
fee is waived for this free event, pets are not allowed in the Refuge. For

Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge Complex consists of Nisqually NWR, the Black
River Unit of Nisqually NWR, and Grays Harbor NWR. The mission of the National
Wildlife Refuge System is to administer a national network of lands and waters
for the conservation, management, and where appropriate, restoration of fish,
wildlife, and plant resources and their habitats within the United States for
the benefit of present and future generations.
