Little Big Day ?going East


Hi all,

Rick Droker and Delia and I headed out for a leisurely day driving and stopping in a relentlessly eastward direction.

We missed the Nashville Warbler that had been in our yard Friday evening but couldn?t miss the abundant Yellow Rumped Warblers that have been so thick around here since Friday that there have been three in our bird bath at once.

Anyway here are the birds in order seen and more or less where seen.

1. Yellow Rumped Warbler in the yard
2. Orange Crowned Warbler etc.
3. Bushtit
4. Black Capped Chickadee
5. Violet Green Swallow we seem to have two couples again this year, knock on wood. Our couples constantly entertain, so we often had 10 swallows around in April. Anyone who can should put up boxes for these birds.

8. House Finch
9. Pine Siskin going east on I-90, we stopped at Asahel Curtis nature walk
10. Varied Thrush
11. Dark Eyed Junco
12. Winter Wren
13. Golden Crowned Kinglet
14. Stellar?s Jay
15. Rufous Hummingbird Over the crest now, we stopped at Lake Easton
16. Common Loon
17. Chestnut Backed Chickadee
18. American Robin
19. Song Sparrow
20. Harlequin Duck in the River near the town of Easton
21. American Merganser
22. Vaux?s Swift
23. Barn Swallow
24. Downy Woodpecker
25. Rock Pigeon
26. Brown Creeper
27. European Starling (we maybe could have ticked this sooner)
28. White Crowned Sparrow
29. Flicker
30. Bald Eagle on I-90
31. Canada Goose We took the old road from Cle Elum to Ellensburg
32. Western Bluebird (and made a detour out to Hidden Valley)
33. Western Meadowlark
34. Black Billed Magpie
35. Say?s Phoebee
36. American Kestrel (we saw maybe 6 more)
37. Cassin?s Finch
38. Red Breasted Nuthatch (at a nest)
39. Savanna Sparrow
40. Tree Swallow
41. American Goldfinch
42. Brewer?s Blackbird
43. Red Tailed Hawk
44. Mountain Bluebird
45. Red Winged Blackbird
46. Pileated Woodpecker heard only (back on the old road to Ellensburg)
47. Rough Winged Swallow (we saw no birds at the Bank Swallow colony in Ellensburg)
48. Sharp Shinned Hawk
49. Dipper ( feeding 2 young under a bridge on the old road . Rick thought he heard a Veery there.
50. Wood Duck
51. Northern Raven
52. Turkey Vulture (4 or 5)
53. Osprey
54. Cliff Swallow
55. Spotted Towhee
56. Prairie Falcon
57. Mallard
58. Mourning Dove
59. California Quail (now we?re heading out of Ellensburg on the old road to Vantage)
60. Belted Kinfisher
61. Sage Thrasher now we?re across the Columbia on the old road headed for the Petrified Forest
62. Brewer?s Sparrow
63. Horned Lark
64. Vesper Sparrow
65. Rock Wren
66. Sage Sparrow --singing, close in, looking really fantastic
67. Loggerhead Shrike (3 in two locations)
68. Gadwall now we?re at Frenchman?s Coulee
69. Yellow Headed Blackbird

71. White Throated Swift (about 10 at the cliffs, looking so much bigger and faster than the VG swallows)

73. Sandhill Crane (14 flew over)

75. Redhead (maybe 10)
76. Ring Necked Duck

78. Pied Billed Grebe
79. Lesser Scaup
80. Ring Billed Gull back in Vantage
81. American Widgeon pond off I-90
82. Bufflehead
83. Ruddy Duck

Next weekend we can head the other direction for the Shorebird Festival in Hoquiam, hope to see everyone there.
