It's been a better-than-average spring for new yard birds up here in n. Lake
Stevens. The latest, heard at about 9 p.m. Saturday night, April 24, was a
WESTERN GREBE. I'd never heard one in night flight but while working
outside I clearly heard the scratchy "creek" notes as the bird overflew in a
northerly direction. Then this morning I had two PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHERS,
later than average for arrival, but then the closed-canopy forest has been
subject to many windfalls in recent years, probably making it less
attractive to this species.

Down at the Ballard locks on Thurs, April 22, there were still 5 BARROW'S
GOLDENEYES hanging in there, as well as an odd buteo, sp. Also at April 22,
we had two Double-crested Cormorants fly over up in Lake Stevens, new for
the yard, probably en route to Lake Bosworth, which has been heavily planted
with trout recently.
