Spent yesterday (Aug 4) searching unsuccessfully for the BLACK-TAILED GULL
that was
found by Charlie Wright on Tuesday. Arrived at the pullout on hwy 105 at
North Cove at 9:00 AM (about 1 hour before low tide). Over 100 HEERMAN'S
GULLS,
a single CALIFORNIA GULL and a BROWN PELICAN made up the
flock on the sand flats at that time. As the tide dropped the bird numbers
decreased at this location. I returned again at 1:00 PM with a rising tide
and watched larger numbers of various gulls arriving, but did not find the
BLACK-TAILED GULL. I left at 3:15 PM. Other birders were still present when
I left, so perhaps it was found later in the day.

The best bird of the day was a immature FRANKLIN'S GULL at Tokeland. As
you drive through Tokeland, before reaching the marina, there is a long rock
"wall" along the right side of the road. At a large pullout along this
wall, I climbed on top of the rocks and watched the gull walking nearby on
the exposed mudflats. Bird was seen at 10:15 AM, and again at 12:00.
