There was a published report of a flock of seven Pacific Common Eiders
(Somateria mollissima v-nigra) and later of two females on the flats there
by Bowles for January 6, 1906 off the Nisqually reach. Dawson also reported
the species as seen between Tacoma and Olympia February 9, 1906. Jewett et
al. include it on this basis in their Birds of Washington State. However,
there were but sketchy details and in the absence of any subsequent reports
south of Canada it has been treated as hypothetical.
