This AM the Black-tailed Gull was unusually cooperative at the usual North
Cove location. I arrived at 0745 and Bill Twiet was there with the bird in
the scope. We and others watched the bird for about an hour. The bird was
on the correct side of the large gull flock and we had excellent views. (It
was still there from 1015 to 1030 when I passed back by).
I moved on to Tokeland as Alan Richards (hope I got this right) had noted
that the Franklin's Gull was still around this morning. Well I had no luck
with the Franklin's, but I did find a very fine alternate plumaged
Bar-Tailed Godwit. This bird stands out quite well amoung the 420 or so
Marbled Godwits and ~ 50 Whimbrel. Willet and Long-billed Curlew were
present here as well. The location was at the shore access by the corner of
7th and Kindred Street. This is the well-known large shorebird hangout on
the west side of the peninsula, Just before the RV park and well before
Nelson Crab Co. The Bar-tailed was here at least from 0900 to 1000, on the
mid and rising tide. Pretty good consolation for my 2nd miss on the
Franklin's and overall a great morning. Good luck to all who chase (or
find... great job Charlie).
