Dale,

Here is a great site for bird house design for all sorts of birds. I'm sure
you will be able to adapt something to your log.

The WDFW has good nest site info on their site, too.

You can hang the nest now and let it weather over the winter. Some birds
use cavities for winter shelters, too. In my experience, hanging the bird
house is much harder and lot more dangerous than the building part,
especially if you build a big, heavy box. Chickadees nest low, so their
boxes are easy to hang.. If you have, or can borrow, a copy of The Birder's
Handbook by Ehrlich, Dobkin, and Wheye, it gives typical nest heights.

For Chestnut-back Chickadee, they have typical hts as 1.5 to 12 feet (less
typically to 80 ft)
For Black-capped Chickadde, they have typical hts as 4 to 8 ft (less
typically to 40 ft)

Have fun,
Kelly Cassidy
