Hi Tweeters,

Since there has been so much discussion on Tweeters about gulls lately, I think it is time to reprise a gull discussion that occurred on Tweeters about eight years ago.

Someone e-mailed Tweeters asking if anyone knew a ditty like "Thirty Days Hath September . . ." that had all of the field marks of each of the gulls in it, and could be used as a tool for identifying Washington's gulls. I offered this one (this was before many of the rare gulls started showing up, which is why they aren't included):

Black wing-tips hath the Heermann's Gull,
Black wing-tips hath the Franklin's Gull,
Black wing-tips hath the Bonaparte's Gull,
Black wing-tips hath the Ring-billed Gull,
Black wing-tips hath the Mew Gull,
Black wing-tips hath the California Gull,
Black wing-tips hath the Herring Gull,
Black wing-tips hath the Thayer's Gull,
Black wing-tips hath the Western Gull,
Black wing-tips hath the Black-legged Kittiwake,
Black wing-tips hath the Sabine's Gull,
Ah, heck, I think I'll just go look at ducks.
