Dear Washington Birders:
Five of us just completed a 10-day tour of northwestern Washington. We
spent 3 days in Packwood and Mount Rainier, 3 days along the coast at
Westport, Tokeland, and the Saturday pelagic trip with Phil and Chris
Anderson, and 3 days at Sequim, Dungeness, Port Angeles, and Hurricane
Ridge. We found a total of 166 species. Here are the highlights. Thanks
for the help that many of you gave to us along the way. Pelagic results
will be posted on the Westport Pelagics web site.

Great Egret--1 in Westport 14 Aug; 1 at Tokeland 15 Aug.

Greater White-fronted Goose--2 adults at the Hoquiam Sewage Pond 16 Aug.

Black-crowned Night-Heron--1 in Westport in the pre-dawn hours of 15
Aug.

Merlin--1 chasing Bald Eagles at the mouth of the Dungeness River 18
Aug.

Peregrine Falcon--2 imm near 3 Crabs Restaurant 18 Aug.

Prairie Falcon--1 at Panorama Point, Paradise, Mount Rainier 10 Aug. We
found it because the ptarmigan reacted as it flew overhead!

White-tailed Ptarmigan--FOUR at Panorama Point, just east of the large
snowfield, 10 Aug. They called and looked up as the Prairie Falcon flew
over.

Mountain Quail--4 adults and 4 young at the abandoned Port Orchard
Airport 19 Aug, 7-8:30 AM. They were in the narrow strip of trees
between the runway and the active gravel quarry, west of the runway.

Snowy Plover--1 adult at Midway Beach, 200 yards north of the beach
access road 15 Aug.

Black Oystercatcher--2 ad and 1 juv on Dungeness Spit, roughly one mile
out the spit 18 Aug.

Long-billed Curlew--2 at Tokeland near the marina 15 Aug.

Bar-tailed Godwit--1 mostly in breeding plumage at the Tokeland Marina
15 Aug.

Red Knot--1 at Bottle Beach 15 Aug.

Red-breasted Sapsucker--1 adult along the north border of Angle Lake
Park in SeaTac 10 Aug.

A mammalian highlight was a male Northern Elephant Seal 50 feet offshore

at Dungeness Spit 18 Aug. We were also able to help with the annual
trash pickup at Dungeness, for the second year in a row.

We all had a wonderful time birding Washington--Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,
BOB SCHUTSKY
