Hi Tweets,

I spent the late afternoon and early evening huckleberry picking at my
favorite site on the Highway 2 corridor. (No, I'm not telling where. The
huckleberry pickers among you will understand.) It was quiet, not raining,
and I was all alone in the picking field. That's huckleberry heaven! Then,
all of a sudden around 5 p.m. there was a literal outburst of birds. It was
an explosion of activity and a thundering of wings for about ten minutes.
Then they all quieted back down and disappeared into the understory and the
trees. I don't think I've experienced that before, certainly not while
berry picking. I grabbed my binocs from the fanny pack and was able to
identify the following before they all disappeared: BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK,
WESTERN TANAGER, AMERICAN ROBIN, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE, AMERICAN
GOLDFINCH, TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, HERMIT THRUSH, STELLER'S JAY, JUNCO,
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER.

Good birding and good berry picking,

Carol Riddell
