Greetings,
Yesterday on a drive back through eastern Washington I stopped briefly at a
couple of shorebird spots along Highway 26 in Adams and Grant Counties.
They included the sewage pond at the rest area just east of the intersection
of Highway 395 and Hwy 26 in Adams County, and the county line ponds west of
Othelo in Grant County.
At the rest area sewage ponds were 13 species including: Stilt Sandpiper
(1), Pectoral Sandpiper (1), Bairds Sandpiper (3), Semipalmated Sandpiper
(1), Western Sandpiper (15), Least Sandpiper (4), Dowitcher sp. (2), Leasser
Yellowlegs (5), Greater Yellowlegs (4), Wilsons Phalerope (3), Killdeer
(5+), Black-necked Stilt (2), American Avocet (3). Pretty amazing variety
for the size of the place.
At the county line ponds were: Least, Western, Semipalmated (1) and Baird's
Sandpipers; Wilson's and Red-necked Phalerope (1); Black-necked Stilt,
American Avocet, and Dowitcher (probably long-billed). A peregrine came
through and and scattered most of the shorebirds, but was not successfull.
Most surprizing was a Canyon Wren working the guardrail.
As fun as all that was, I'm wishing I was at Luhr. Oh well.
