This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Rare Bird Alert for
Saturday, August 28, sponsored in part by Wild Birds Unlimited, with
stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Sightings for Saturday, August 28:

There are now 9 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS on the turf farm at 72nd
Street in Delta. A bird believed to be a juvenile BAR-TAILED GODWIT
was also seen here as well as a PACIFIC-GOLDEN PLOVER.

The RUFF continued to be seen in the flooded field off Highway 17
near the coal port jetty. Also here were 2 STILT SANDPIPERS, 12 RED-
NECKED PHALAROPES and 2 WILSON'S PHALAROPES.

22 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS WERE AT 34B and 57B Streets in Delta, and
2 AMERICAN KESTRELS were at 57B and Deltaport Way.

3 MARBLED GODWITS and an adult FRANKLIN'S GULL were at the
compensation lagoon off the Tsawwassen ferry jetty and 2 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES were at the end of the jetty.

Friday, August, 27:

3 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were seen off 72nd Street in Boundary Bay,
near the railway tracks. Also present was a PURPLE MARTIN.

An AMERICAN AVOCET was on Iona Beach, near the parking lot. Also at
Iona, a HEERMANN'S GULL was on the south jetty.

The flooded field of Highway 17 held 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and 9
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE.

3 MARBLED GODWITS were at the compensation Lagoon on the Tsawwassen
Ferry jetty.

Thursday,August 26:

RARE BIRD ALERT! A SAY'S PHOEBE was found in the afternoon at the
foot of 96th Street.

In a ploughed field along Highway 10 just past the Big Slough Bridge
and right before 112th Street a large flock of BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS
had the adult BAR-TAILED GODWIT and a MARBLED GODWIT.

In a field off Highway 17 near Deltaport Way were 2 juvenile RUFFS (1
male and 1 female)seen together in the morning. Later in the
afternoon there were 8 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 2 WILSON'S PHALAROPES,
4 STILT SANDPIPERS, the REEVE and 17 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE
reported.

On the 72nd Street Turf Farm were 2 juvenile BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS
and an adult male LAPLAND LONSPUR.

On the dyke just east of 104th Street a VESPER SPARROW was found with
SAVANNAH SPARROWS.

At the Mansion were 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 1 WHIMBREL and 1 RED
KNOT.

At the Compensation Lagoon at the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty were 3
MARBLED GODWITS and a FRANKLIN'S GULL

On the West side of Deer Lake a flock of 10 PURPLE MARTINS were
observed.
